5 Tips To Keep Your Spine Healthy This Holiday Season
The holidays are full of joy—but also extra strain on your back. Here are quick tips to keep your spine healthy so you can enjoy the season pain-free.
1. Lift Smart
From luggage to gift boxes, avoid injury by:
Bending your knees, not your waist
Holding items close to your body
Pivoting with your feet, not twisting your back
Asking for help with heavy or awkward loads
2. Limit Strain in the Kitchen & While Wrapping
Hours standing or sitting, especially while bent forward, can tighten your spine. Try to:
Mix up sitting and standing
Wrap gifts at a table, not the floor
Stretch every 30–45 minutes
3. Travel Comfortably
Long trips can stiffen your back. Helpful habits:
Use lumbar support (a rolled sweatshirt works!)
Take movement breaks every 60–90 minutes
Keep hips and knees level
4. Stay Warm to Stay Loose
Cold weather can increase muscle tension, which may worsen stiffness or pain. Warm muscles move better and hurt less. Bundle up with:
Layers that keep your core warm
Gloves to maintain grip strength (especially helpful when carrying bags or shoveling snow)
A gentle warm-up before outdoor activities
5. Stress Less, Move More
The emotional load of the holidays can tighten muscles and intensify discomfort.
Pair this with a daily 10-minute walk or light stretching to keep your body—and mind—feeling balanced.
Wishing you a healthy, comfortable, and joyful holiday season!
