Pregnancy Chiropractic

Chiropractic:

During pregnancy, a woman’s center of gravity shifts forward, increasing the stress on her joints.  As the baby grows, the curvature of the mother’s low back is increased, placing more stress on the spinal discs.  Getting adjusted by a chiropractor during pregnancy can help reduce this stress, help you feel better, and even help you have an easier and shorter labor.  At Southern Oregon Spine + Rehab, we have chiropractors who are trained in Webster Technique, which can encourage breech babies to turn head-down for birth.

Massage:

Massage therapy during pregnancy can help you reduce stress, stimulate circulation, and ease tight muscles.  Our massage therapists are trained in specific techniques for pregnancy to help you achieve relaxation.

New Mom Ergonomics:

Once the baby is born it is common for focus to move away from your own needs and onto that new bundle of joy.  It’s important for expecting moms to know that hormonal changes in pregnancy can loosen the joints and ligaments that attach your pelvic bones to your spine.  The forty weeks (give or take) of pregnancy bring tremendous change to the body: ligaments become more lax, hormones shift, and the body prepares for birth.

So much care and attention goes into caring for the body during pregnancy. However, postpartum, this care and attention often shifts to the new baby, effectively forgetting the tremendous changes and healing the mother’s body undergoes in a relatively short period of time in the weeks following giving birth.  You will constantly tote around a  baby that weighs 7 lbs. or more PLUS gear like diaper bags, baby carriers, groceries and possibly another child, all of which can easily lead to serious neck and back aches.  We can help you avoid injury during this crucial period of healing and support you in this time of transition.

Postpartum Recovery and Post-Cesarean Core Rehabilitation:

As you care for your new baby, dedicating time and making a plan to heal your own body naturally through postpartum chiropractic care and a postpartum rehabilitation program is an essential investment in your ability to be the healthiest mom you can be for years to come.

The weeks and months following the birth of a child can be some of the most cherished and beautiful in life.   The first days and weeks postpartum are a crucial time for care and attention to be paid to the mother’s body and health as well.  Ensuring proper alignment of the spine and joints as the ligaments and hormones reset can help prevent injury and future problems such as sacroiliitis, an inflammatory condition of the joints of the pelvis.  In addition to ensuring proper alignment, a preventative rehabilitation program, can help reengage the core, strengthen the pelvic floor, and protect the low back from future injuries.  Completing a postpartum rehabilitation program can help you safely return to or begin a fitness regimen, while preventing injuries and back pain in the future.

Massage Therapy

Massage therapy is a form of health care consisting of manual manipulation of muscle and connective tissue to promote relaxation, rehabilitation & rejuvenation.

Massage therapy received on a regular basis can:

Ease muscle and joint pain

Improve range of motion and joint flexibility

Reduce muscle spasms and cramping

Relieve headache and migraine pain

Prevent or relieve sports and work-related injuries

Improve sleep

Enhance blood circulation

Support the body’s immune system

Reduce tension and stress

Reduce anxiety, depression and anger

Increase energy and vitality

Acupuncture

Acupuncture is one of the five branches of Traditional Chinese Medicine.  It is the insertion of fine gauge needles into specific energetic points along the body that encourages the body to heal itself.  Chinese Medicine treats the body as a whole, meaning if a patient has chronic pain and has tried several pain relieving methods without relief, there must be an internal imbalance that is not allowing the body to heal.  The other four branches of Traditional Chinese Medicine are: herbal medicine, massage and body work, exercise and nutrition.  Since we are all unique individuals, every treatment is personalized, so two people with the same condition will most likely receive different treatment, that is the beauty of Chinese Medicine.

The World Health Organization currently recognizes acupuncture and Chinese Medicine as a successful treatment option (through clinical research) for:

Adverse reactions to radiotherapy and/or chemotherapy

Allergic rhinitis

Depression

Dysmenorrhea/Painful periods

Facial pain (including craniomandibular disorders)

Headache

Hypertension or Hypotension

Pain in dentistry (including dental pain and temporomandibular dysfunction)

Auto Injuries

After an auto injury it is important to have your spine examined by a Doctor of Chiropractic.  Research shows even a 5 mph collision can cause a whiplash injury.  At Southern Oregon Spine + Rehab, all of our doctors are experienced at diagnosing and treating auto injuries.  We prevent your injury from becoming chronic, and most importantly, get you back to doing what you love.  We accept all major auto insurances.

Class 4 Laser Therapy

Laser Therapy, or “photobiomodulation”, is the use of specific wavelengths of light (red and near-infrared) to create therapeutic effects. These effects include improved healing time, pain reduction, increased circulation and decreased swelling. Laser Therapy has been widely utilized in Europe by physical therapists, nurses and doctors as far back as the 1970’s. Now, after FDA clearance in 2002, Laser Therapy is being used extensively in the United States.

Non-Surgical Spinal Decompression

Southern Oregon Spine + Rehab specializes in Non-Surgical Spinal Decompression (NSSD) Therapy for bulging, herniated and degenerated discs, as well as chronic neck and low back pain. Cases most commonly treated by NSSD include: Disc herniations, disc degeneration, sciatica, facet syndrome, intervertebral foraminal stenosis and chronic neck and back pain.

Spinal Decompression performed on a DRX 9000 unit, should not be confused with traction devices. The DRX 9000 gently lengthens and decompresses the spine, creating negative pressures within the discs. This reversal of pressure creates an intradiscal vacuum that not only takes pressure off pinched nerves, but can help to reposition bulged discs and pull extruded disc material back into place. Spinal experts believe that nutrients, oxygen, and fluids are drawn into the disc to create a revitalized environment conducive to healing. At Southern Oregon Spine + Rehab we believe there are many options to conservatively treat injuries and conditions that were once only treated by surgical intervention.

Sports Pre-Participation Physicals

The Chiropractic Physicians at Southern Oregon Spine + Rehab regularly perform Pre-participation Sports Physicals for school and club athletics.  Our providers are certified by OHSU in concussion management and return to play protocols.  We use the Sport Concussion Assessment Tool to keep a baseline examination on file in order to more accurately detect and diagnose concussions with a higher degree of certainty.  We believe every student athlete should have a SCAT baseline prior to beginning a contact sport.

Work Related Injuries

Did you know that after an on-the-job injury it is your right to see the provider of your choice?

In the state of Oregon, a Doctor of Chiropractic can serve as the attending physician on a workers compensation case for up to 18 visits or 60 days without a referral.  Oregon law requires treating physicians to qualify with the Worker’s Compensation Board to treat patients under this system.  All of the Doctors of Chiropractic at Southern Oregon Spine + Rehab are fully qualified in Oregon to provide care to workers injured on the job.
