Traditional manual manipulation entails a Chiropractic Physician using their hands to restore motion to a joint using a quick but gentle impulse that separates the surface of a restricted joint. We now know from the research that the subsequent “popping” noise that is created is not from the bones or cartilage of that joint, but from gasses being released from the joint, which we call a “cavitation.”
What if a joint does not pop?
Studies have found that about 3 out of 4 manual chiropractic manipulations result in an audible pop. Many patients develop an expectation to hear a pop and relate their improvements to that distinct part of treatment. Some patients even look forward to hearing the sound!
Many patients believe that “if it cracks, you know it moved” and are disappointed at times by a quiet manipulation. However, there are numerous research studies that have concluded that manipulation is equally beneficial whether a joint pops or not.
Quiet Chiropractic Manipulation
Some chiropractic techniques are designed to restore joint motion without a popping sound, often referred to as quiet chiropractic or low-force techniques. Some of these techniques are regularly used at SOSR, such as Flexion-Distraction, Drop Table, Instrument Manipulation, SOT Blocking, and Mobilization, just to name a few. Bottom line, we can find the right type of manipulation to meet your needs and preferences: with or without a POP!
